The New ‘Minecraft’ Xbox One S Console And Controllers Are Blocky Perfection

Earlier today, during Microsoft’s Gamescom press conference in Germany, it was announced that Xbox One X pre-orders were going live. Strangely enough, that wasn’t my favorite unveiling. And friends, trust me when I say that I don’t even like Minecraft, so this caught me by surprise.

Alongside the somewhat expected big news, a 1TB (and gloriously pixelated) Minecraft Limited Edition Xbox One S Bundle was also shown. Here’s a direct quote from the press release detailing exactly what will be included with the unit once it’s released later this year.

a custom designed grass block console, Xbox Wireless Controller – Minecraft Creeper, Minecraftsystem sounds, vertical stand and transparent underside with Redstone circuit accents. This exclusive bundle also includes a full game download of Minecraft plus the Redstone Pack, a collection of unique skin packs.”

I mostly know about Minecraft via the enthusiastic kids I’ve worked with throughout my career in special education and mental health treatment facilities, and since it was first released back in 2011, I’ve maybe played five minutes total of Notch’s unstoppable build-anything, buy-all-the-merchandise sandbox. Honestly,

it’s never been my cup of tea (or rather my can of Monster Energy), but I absolutely love the look of this upcoming variant. Maybe it’s because if you take away the Minecraft branding, it stands alone as a throwback, retro-inspired device. I’m particularly psyched about the clear base, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this is the first Xbox One S to feature a see-through anything. If Microsoft really pulls this off, the aesthetic should scratch my radical Nineties ‘xtreme’ itch

And that’s just the console itself—the accompanying controller looks equally impressive. I’ve posted quite a bit about my love affair with gamepad variants, and this Creeper-faced peripheral is something I’m definitely going to need in my growing collection. Here’s the breakdown: Green thumbsticks, green directional pad and green face buttons imbued with blocky font reminiscent of the game’s theming.

A Creeper looks out at players from beneath the Xbox button and the back of the gamepad is emblazoned with a pixelated bundle of TNT (complete with winding fuse). The controller will also be available for purchase separately ($74.99 MSRP), along with an equally cool Pig version ($74.99 MSRP) that sports awesome pink coloring and an adorable, blocky swine mug. Both devices feature textured grip, and with such a brightly inviting motif, there can’t exist a cooler way to play Minecraft.

Microsoft says the console bundle will be available in limited quantities in all markets (except China and Brazil) on October 3, 2017 for a MSRP of $399.99, and you can pre-order it now. The individual controllers will hit US Microsoft Stores and Targets on September 5, 2017 and will be available at other retailers starting September 12, 2017. If you’re interested in any of these products, it might be wise to bite the bullet and jump on them now. There’s no telling what the actual production numbers will be like, and if I can play amateur psychic for a moment, these variants are sure to be hot items for the upcoming holiday season.

I never thought I’d say this, but Minecraft has me excited, and October can’t come fast enough. In the meantime, I’d love to know your thoughts. Will you be partaking in any of the blocky goodness? Let me know in the comments section or on social media.
