Medha Patkar, founder of Narmada Bachao Andolan, was on Monday removed from the protest site in Dhar after all efforts failed to convince her to call off the agitation.
Social activist Medha Patkar, who had been on an indefinite fast since July 27, was on Monday shifted to a private medical facility from Chikhalda in Dhar district after efforts to convince her to end the protest failed.
Patkar, the founder of the Narmada Bachao Andolan, and her associates had launched the fast demanding proper rehabilitation and resettlement of those affected by the Sardar Sarovar Project.
Eleven others activists who were protesting with Patkar have also been admitted at hospitals in Dhar and Barwani.
A decision was taken on Monday to intervene and shift Patkar to a hospital considering her deteriorating health. Besides this, as long as Patkar was present at the protest site, politics over the issue was getting fuelled.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, on Monday evening, condemned the decision of moving of Medha Patkar from the protest site. Earlier, AAP MP Bhagwant Mann visited the dam and affected areas. Congress leaders too had been visiting Barwani and had raised the rehabilitation issue in the monsoon session of the Vidhan Sabha.
CM Chouhan on Monday took to Twitter to clarify that Medha Patkar had not been arrested but had to be moved to a hospital owing to the high sugar and ketone level in her blood, as disclosed in the doctor’s report. A medical team was stationed at the dharna site to monitor her health. He also said that he was committed to the relief and rehabilitation work of those displaced by the dam.
For the last one week, track II efforts to get Medha Patkar to call off her indefinite fast were on but in vain. Emissaries in the form of officers from the CM Secretariat met Medha Patkar besides godman Bhaiyyu Maharaj but could not convince her to call off her agitation.
Former Chief Secretary Sharad Chandra Behar also met Patkar but was unable to get her to call off the agitation. On Monday evening, a large deployment of police personnel arrived at the agitation site at Chikalda and removed Medha Patkar from there.
On Monday night, she was brought to the Bombay Hospital in Indore where she was admitted at the ICU. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the matter relating to relief and rehabilitation of displaced people on Tuesday.
